We’re taking a look at this week’s release schedule and seeing a whole lot of album tracks we’ve been listening to for ages. In fact there’s only one new song proper that takes our fancy and that’s Sony boy Loick Essien’s (pronounced “Lou-eek”) ‘How I Roll’ feat. Tanya Lacey, a slick urban-pop crossover in the vein of Ne-Yo, Taio Cruz. It helps that Loick has a rich R&B voice to give the song depth.
Loick collaborator Chipmunk (Loick appeared on I Am Chipmunk track ‘Beast’) also drops a track - ‘Take Off’ feat. Trey Songz, about a girlfriend who drags Chip down because she can’t deal with his fame. The singles from parent album Transition haven’t been doing too hot, which is a shame, because Chipmunk has really upped his game. With that said, ‘Take Off’ isn’t the best representation of what is by and large a good record. In fact, a better spend of 99p would be the remix of The Saturdays - ‘Notorious’ Chipmunk recently put a verse to.
Then there’s Keri Hilson (who has also worked with Chipmunk - hasn’t everyone!?!) giving ‘Pretty Girl Rock’ an official outing here in the UK. It previously peaked at #53 on our charts at the beginning of the year on the strength of downloads alone, with its “female empowerment” message proving popular. Written by Ne-Yo, it’s a cutesy R&B mid-tempo that can be obnoxious if you take it too seriously.
Also released this week is the phenomenal ‘Super Bass’ by Nicki Minaj. Great to see a bonus track from the ‘Pink Friday’ album being recognised as the smash hit that it is. Nicki seems to be an acquired taste, but she’s making rap interesting at a time when the Lil Kims of the world are selling albums through Paypal and the Missy Elliotts have been too poorly to write and record ): Nicki isn’t afraid to harness the power of pop, and it shows here in an unabashedly bombastic way.
Avril Lavigne is hustling for your download with ‘Smile’, a bratty, powerpop track produced by Max Martin and Shellback. Yes, Avril’s a big girl now and perhaps should have grown out of this perpetual adolescence she hawks, but the truth is, she’s damn good at it. ‘Smile’ is an easy little guitar driven number that packs a bit of a punch and is perfectly suited to the more summery weather we’ve been treated to lately.
Finally, Adele takes ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ for a spin, but at this point you have to wonder why she’s bothering - everyone and their cat owns the album now, right? There’s no video for this single and no need for one either. Adele’s runaway success this year is well deserved but staggering - did you know 21 has been certified 9x platinum? On Sunday it was a non-mover at #2 on the official Top 40 in its 23rd week in the charts. ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ isn’t the worst track we’ve written about here, but it needs your support the least!
