It’s a slow week for new releases - we’re not particularly enamoured with anything due to hit the charts on Sunday, and besides, Rihanna will probably be #1 again anyway.
With that said, if you’ve got 99p there are worse songs you could spend it on than The X Factor Finalists 2011 (featuring JLS & One Direction) and their cover of ‘Wishing On A Star’ - a song that proves to be so brilliant, not even that motley crew could balls it up. True, the JLS & One Direction “feature” (all of the last 20 seconds of it) is just a cynical way to get more teenage girls to cough up their cash, but in an odd way we kinda like the “JLS! 1D!” cry that heralds their appearance. Most importantly, all proceeds will go to the children’s charity Together For Short Lives. If you caught the VT before the performance of this on Sunday night’s show, you’ll agree that this is a very worthy cause.
In less heart-rending corners, Emeli Sandé releases her second solo single, and her first since bagging a #1 with Professor Green on ‘Read All About It’. There’s a stark franticness to ‘Daddy’ feat. Naughty Boy, but it’s not even close to the epicness of ‘Heaven’. Still, Emeli has an incredibly listenable voice which makes the non-event chorus far more eventful than it should be.
StooShe drop ‘Betty Woz Gone’ in their attempt to become the girl band that sticks. With The Saturdays making a dismal showing on both the album and singles chart, the Girls Aloud reunion allegedly being delayed and the skeletons of the careers of RD, the Sugababes, Soundgirl and Parade being picked apart by pop vulture fanatics along the roadside, the time has never been more ripe for a girl group to make a massive splash. This gutsy, profanity-riddled effort that sounds as if it was lifted from the soundtrack of a streetwise West End musical and even nods to the theme tune from The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air probably won’t make more than a ripple, which is a shame. On the other hand, when Little Mix win the X Factor in a couple of weeks, we won’t be mourning these lesser girl groups so much.
Finally, Lady Gaga’s ‘A Very Gaga Holiday’ EP hit UK iTunes towards the end of last week and as you might be able to tell from our Pick of the Day, we’re a tiny bit in love with it. Gaga’s voice is completely breathtaking throughout, and superfans will appreciate the opportunity to own a legitimate copy of her gorgeous cover of ‘Orange Coloured Sky’.
Slow release week this week - there’s only three tracks really worthy of mention and probably only one of them actually deserves a purchase!
Of course the POLARISING and CONTROVERSIAL Cher Lloyd is already sitting pretty at the top of the iTunes chart with ‘Swagger Jagger’, a song we admit grew on us to the point where we find ourselves shouting “GET ON THE FLOOOORRRRR” at random intervals far more often than is sane. It will be interesting to see if Cher maintains her position throughout the week - the video for ‘Swagger Jagger’ currently has double the dislikes than likes on YouTube. Still, it’s obvious people can’t stop clicking on her, tweeting about her, writing pop blogs about her etc etc etc.
Dev, who is no stranger to the high end of the UK charts having had two top 10 hits, and a #1 this week with the JLS boys, releases ‘In The Dark’. There’s confusion in our minds as to whether this is a decent track - it starts off promising a dark, filthy club beat then suddenly takes a sharp turn down Alexandra Stan Street and begins to sound like a Mr. Saxobeat homage. It’s not as good as ‘Bass Down Low’, is what we’re saying here.
Finally, Talay Riley (of Chipmunk collaboration ‘Look For Me’ fame) debuts his first non-buzz single - a fresh, sexy R&B number called ‘Make You Mine’. The boys really seem to have the summer on lock this year - all our favourite tracks for the season have been by male artists, and ‘Make You Mine’ is no exception. This is the track that deserves your 99p. Stick it on your summer playlist and blast it out in the garden, the car, the park or wherever the sun is shining.

On Wednesday, we were at the National Movie Awards to watch Take That and JLS perform (separately, not together). This is what you would have seen on your telly box:
LASERS.
ROBOTS.
Eliza Doolittle was there too, but we weren’t very interested in her.
While we were gone, The Black Eyed Peas and The Feeling premiered new videos, Björk kicked off the promo campaign for latest album Biophilia and Katy Perry became the first artist in US chart history to spend an entire year in the Top 10.
Lady Gaga is in the country for a whole mess of promotion, starting with The Graham Norton Show (where she arrived looking like this) and ending with her headlining set at Radio 1’s Big Weekend on Sunday. She did a very exclusive gig at Annabel’s in Mayfair last night, where the likes of will.i.am, Stephen Fry and Phillipa Middleton were in attendance and so were we. Gaga performed a cover of ‘Orange Coloured Sky’, an acoustic version of ‘Born This Way’, ‘You & I’ and ‘Speechless’. Gaga sang ‘Born This Way’ to Kate Moss who was sitting in the front row, changing the lyrics slightly.
There is a new teaser for Beyoncé’s ‘Run The World (Girls)’ video that looks like this:
Still not sold on the song, but the video looks like it’s going to be awesome.
As if that wasn’t enough for two days of not being “on the ball”, we’re sitting on some very exciting news that we can’t wait to share with you, so check back NEXT FRIDAY for the big announcement.
