There seems to be a mad rush of biggish releases this week, presumably as artists push to chart before the X Factor cinch the #1. Are any of these releases any good? We’re about to tell you.
Do you remember Lloyd Daniels from a few series of X Factor ago? No, neither do we really. Other than the rumours he was dating Danyl Johnson (also from a few series of X Factor ago) he has been largely off the radar. We had no idea he was still interested in music, especially as at the time of his exit he seemed to be content with “just being a model or something”. Anyway, he has a single out this week called ‘Suburbian Girl’ which is very Olly Murs-esque. We’re not convinced by it, but judging by his fans on Twitter there’s a market for him nonetheless.
T-Pain set his vocoder to 11 for this Lily Allen sampled track, ‘5 O’ Clock’ which isn’t wholly dreadful, due largely to the quality of the sample. Wiz Khalifa also crops up for a verse but we’ve been allergic to him since the release of ‘Black & Yellow’ so we couldn’t tell you if he’s any good or not. In other rap quarters, Nicki Minaj dropped her buzz single ‘Roman In Moscow’ to start anticipation for her second studio album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Nicki has said that her fans wanted a return to mixtape Nicki, and that’s what she’s tried to deliver. ‘Roman In Moscow’ definitely goes a lot harder than some of the hip-pop stuff on the first album and she has an incredibly varied flow. While Nicki has failed to make as much of a splash here as she has abroad, hopefully that will all change in 2012.
It seems unlikely that Estelle will ever hit the same level of “fame” she achieved with ‘American Boy’ but we’re charmed by ‘Back To Love’, an oddly warm dance-soul number about lessons learned from break ups. We had no idea Estelle was releasing new music until we looked at the schedule today, and we think it’s a shame this track hasn’t been given more visibility as it’s a great tune. Much like ‘Letter To My Ex’ by Tanya Lacey which is also nowhere to be seen in the iTunes Top 200. ‘Letter To My Ex’ has a fantastic classic British R&B sound which is possibly better suited to summer time driving with the top down than shivering cold December days, but we love it regardless.
In the heavyweight corner, it’s impact date for Katy Perry who releases ‘The One That Got Away’ this week. Katy’s chart position here in the UK is merely gravy for the main course - a 6th Billboard #1 and a historic record broken is her aim. It’s currently top 10 Stateside, so expect a remix and collaboration to be forthcoming to give it that final push. By the way, you can see our review of the video here.
We haven’t done a long video review for ages, because we haven’t been that fussed on any of the videos that have come out recently. However, Katy Perry hasn’t really had a dud video for her entire album campaign and the video for sixth single ‘The One That Got Away’ is no exception.
Without further ado, here is the Love Machine screencap review:

A modest detached residence in the year 2076. We are the 1%

Russell Brand in the year 2076. He’s aged remarkably well.

Katy Perry hanging out in her walk-in wardrobe in the year 2076. The times may have changed, but classic old lady fashion is timeless.

We like this screen cap because we’re a big fan of what teapots will look like in 2076. Like hi-tech watering cans.

FLASHBACK! A young Katy Perry of the past and her boyfriend (real-life actor Diego Luna) are chilling out, drawing and painting some stuff.

They’re not very good :(

Young Katy Perry paints on a moustache, because she is dead quirky and original and moustaches are so ironic and amusing hahahahaha.

Motorcycle? Check. Leather jacket? Check. Fancy retro camera? Check. This is what life looks like if permanently viewed through an instagram filter.

Let’s take polaroid snaps of ourselves in our cool vintage attire! Being a dickhead’s cool!

Still in the FLASHBACK! Young Katy Perry’s boyfriend surprises her…

…by taking her to a party at an Old People’s Home. Because clubbing with people your own age is so mainstream.

Young Katy Perry’s boyfriend steals the pink veil from the head of a fellow partygoer.

This act of larceny apparently still haunts Katy Perry into the future and beyond.

FLASHBACK! again and Young Katy Perry is letting her boyfriend do a DIY tattoo on her arm. It doesn’t look very sterile, we hope she doesn’t catch hepatitis.

Of course, the Katy Perry in the future still has the tattoo on her arm, because tattoos are a PERMANENT ADDITION TO YOUR SKIN and you should think that through before you let some dickhead bloke scratch a crappy design on to you FOREVER.

After some sleep, Young Katy Perry wakes up in her clothes from the night before and probably the same make up too. Slob.

For some reason, Young Katy Perry suddenly appears in the future. Imagine that crawling out of your wardrobe in the middle of the night…

…and then standing in the doorway watching you sleep.

And it’s another FLASHBACK! Young Katy Perry can’t think of what to draw on her big canvas because she’s still tired and hungover from her night out on the tiles at the Old People’s Home.

Young Katy Perry’s boyfriend gets angry for some reason and forces Katy to do a big black scribble on her canvas.

In retaliation, Katy squirts red paint all over his masterpiece. Understandably, he is a bit pissed off.

In the future, Young Katy and old Katy sit on the bed and sing to each other. It’s weird and doesn’t make sense.

In the FLASHBACK! Young Katy’s boyfriend takes his guitar and gets in his car angrily.

In the future, Old Katy Perry gets into a very similar car, but sadly.

Back to FLASHBACK! The stolen veil just fell onto Young Katy Perry’s boyfriend’s lap. He looks down at it instead of concentrating on the road…

…where someone has left some random boulders! Who would do such a thing?

Oh.

This inevitably happens :(

In the future, Young Katy Perry from the past collapses in the wardrobe.

Meanwhile, Old Katy Perry has driven to the scene of the accident.

In a very Titanic-esque scene, the boyfriend appears to Old Katy Perry and they hold hands with their matching tattoo arms.

As Johnny Cash plays, the boyfriend disappears and Old Katy Perry turns and walks away as the screen fades to black…
Okay, despite our “hilarious” commentary, it’s actually a very touching video, for a very touching song. The editing is poorly done, so it’s hard to get a proper sense of the storyline, but the important points are obvious and we suppose that’s all that should matter.
7/10, Katy Perry.
Katy Perry - ‘Waking Up In Vegas’
Hello, have you heard of Lawson? Chances are if you’re a fan of The Wanted or Avril Lavigne you may have caught them live supporting them on tour. Alternatively, if you’re a fan of trawling The YouTube for acoustic cover of hit records you may have stumbled across their better than okay version of The Saturdays - Missing You, better than good version of Bruno Mars - Grenade and better than the original version of Katy Perry - Firework.
Today they dropped a video of their performance of Lady Gaga’s album opener and latest single, ‘Marry The Night’. Lawson are signed to a label now, so the whole affair is a bit more glossy (check out those opening split screens!) but the added style doesn’t mask a lack of substance - this is a really soft, autumnal take on a track we once described as “like a frenetic street-fight sequel to ‘Dance In The Dark’”. Lead singer Andy really does have an incredibly listenable voice, and there’s some fantastic guitar work from Joel which gives the whole performance a magnificent classic rock feel. ‘Marry The Night’ is not our favourite song from Born This Way, but we’re loving the stripped back cool of this.
You can stalk Lawson in all the usual ways: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and they’ve hitched their wagon to the Will Young tour bus next month too so you can get a double fix of great pop music for grown ups in the flesh.
We hear one or two of the boys may be at our Girls Aloud themed birthday party tonight too. If they know the dance routine to Something Kinda Ooooh, they’re our new favourite band.
