Love Machine

We had a bit of a panic at the last Love Machine clubnight when we realised we didn’t have the new Katy Perry song ‘California Girls’ with us. Then we realised that by simply playing ‘Waking Up In Vegas’ back-to-back with Ke$ha’s ‘Your Love Is My Drug’ and mentally overlaying the two, we pretty much had it spot-on anyway. 

However, the video for ‘California Girls’ could hardly be described as deriviative. We haven’t been this amused (Snoop in a cupcake suit), confused (ditto), perturbed (Snoop and his jelly bear army) and aroused (Katy Perry in general) simultaneously since the Girls Can’t Catch playing croquet debacle. Actually that was pretty much just confusion with a dash of amusement, now we think of it.

We’ve got a feeling there’s some innuendo in there somewhere, but it’ll probably take a few viewings for that to really come out.

We couldn’t quite make our minds up about Ke$ha.

On the one hand, Tik Tok was amazing. On the other, she did, let’s face it, completely rip off Uffie’s sound. (Of course, if Uffie had actually released anything in the last 2 years instead of sitting around being cool, she might have got there first.)

On the one hand, Ke$ha is the ultimate sleazy 21st Century Madonna-esque pop star. But on the other, songs like the utterly vacuous Blah Blah Blah featuring the so-vacuous-they’re-almost-a-hoover 3oh!3, are just too throwaway, brash and meaningless.

However, what settles the argument decisively in the court of Ke$ha is a track snuck in at No. 11, at the end of her album……

Quite simply ‘Dinosaur’ is the best pop song of 2010 so far. Without resorting to journo cliche, it genuinely sounds like Daphne and Celeste (ask your Dad) on acid. It is incredible. DI, NO, SA, UR a dinosaur. Teach it to your kids.

Please God/RCA Records make this the next single and get Richard Attenborough and/or Sam Neil and at least 10 velociraptors in the video. Can you imagine. CAN YOU IMAGINE.
